Hi, my last post was asking for advice on the milky substance near my 'chinese firebelly' newts mouth. I posted some pictures to see if anyone could tell me what the substance was, then some members replied saying it wasn't a chinese firebelly (cynops,) but identified it to be a warty newt (Paramesotriton.) I believe the milky substance was a fungal infection. It unfortunatly it died last night.

I'd appreciate it if everyone (with any knowledge about the species) could comment, identifying what species they think it is.

Im then going to forward this to the shop he/her was bought from along with this websites address, to show them they have been mis-informed, and are mis-informing their customers. Thanks for your help!

Sorry for your loss! :( Unfortunately most of the proprietors of pet shops do not care about the welfare of the animals and what are their needs, is a business where just about the money! Buy most newts separate from china and call fire belly of at all! Here in Portugal some even say that they eat food of fish and turtle, is for you to see the ignorance of these people!
Unfortunately when I started with this hobbi also had the same misfortune!
The only way to stop this is to not buy them anything and get the message!
The best way to acquire a newt is to buy the keepers!

Lusiwarrior has a good point. The most effective way to get through to them might be to write a letter to a store/regional manager explaining that you will never shop there again because of your experience, and that you will spread the word. Then get your caudates from breeders here, and buy goods and sundries from other stores or else online.

Most chains won't do the right thing for its own sake, except in the rare event that an individual employee actually cares, in which case you wouldn't be in this predicament. However, explaining that they will loose your regular purchases until they show improvement in the quality, maintenance, and knowledge of their amphibians... they won't change because it's the right thing to do, but they might change if it'll increase their sales.

I´m sorry the newt died....sadly it´s the usual outcome of this things...there wasn´t that much you could have done. Once infections appear it´s usually too late (except for some lucky animals).

In adition to what´s been said, i think you could also tell the pet-shop that instead of continuing to purchase WC animals, they could look into getting something like Pleurodeles waltl. They are CB, hardy, extremely easy and a far better option than any WC asiatic newt, both for the clients and for them (less deaths in the shop, less returns, less angry constumers complaining about the death of animals purchased there). They probable will ignore the idea, but i think it´s worth saying.
