Hi,

I keep one adult male axie and his filter is not working well anymore so I need to replace it, I don't think it was up to the job as it is quite small.

I am not massively practically minded so trying to work out what to do it causing confusion - all the things I find seem to need lots of bits and pieces purchased on top of the filter and nowhere ever seems to give me a straight answer. I tried my local aquarium shop, but they were not terribly helpful either!

My tank size is just slightly bigger than the "simple aquarium" here

Dimensions: 58cm long, 28cm wide and the depth of the water approx 29cm.

If anyone could give me advice that would be wonderful

Alright I hope I can help here, you have a 15 gallon fish tank. When I run canister filters on my Axolotl tanks I always get a filter that is rated for double the amount of gallons of water in my aquarium. Then once I purchase my filter I usually drill more Port holes in the outflow to to reduce water current. I do this because axolotls produce a lot more waste than your typical aquarium fish. Unfortunately they do not like a lot of water flow. These two things are contradictory, that's why you need a larger filter with less water flow than a typical filter would push. Your best bet for finding information on axolotls is either at this website Axolotls: The Fascinating Mexican Axolotl and the Tiger Salamander or information that is discussed on this forum. However take everything you hear from any Forum with a grain of salt, you never know who's behind the keyboard. That website I listed is maintained by true professionals. If you ever have any questions I would seek that knowledge first. But back to your question, I have a 55 gallon and a 40-gallon both housing 3 axolotls. On both I run in an eheim classic canister filter. One is the 2215 the other the 2217 model. Both of those canister filters are rated at least double for the aquarium's that they're on and produce quite an amount of water flow, too much really. So on both I have drilled out extra ports to distribute the water on the output tube, this causes less water flow but I still get the Superior Cleaning power of a large canister filter with high-quality filter media. And it's NEEDED! The problem with pet stores and fish stores, a lot of times the staff is lacking knowledge of this species. A whole lot of people get these guys confused with fish and they are definitely not like fish lol
