We have three axolotls in my(high school)science lab at school and I brought them home for summer vacation. The first night we had them at our house, the smallest one(about 4in long) had been attacked but the bigger ones(which are only 5in long). His left hind leg had been ripped off and its gill had also been nibbled at. It has shown almost no movement in the past couple days. It is belly side up and its mouth is open. I think its dead but my parents are sure it will grow its limbs back. The next day, i went to feed the axolotls and another one was belly side up and showing NO movement at all!!! I have researched axolotls and i have no clue what i did wrong. The tank is clean and has a filter. There is no fake plants or gravel in the tank. They are eating the frozen food that we were givin. WHAT DID I DO TO MAKE THEM DIE!?!?!? Nobody has played with them besides me and i only picked them up a couple of times. Please help! Give me some kind of reason to why they died!}

Are they dead or just floating? Bubbles in the stomach can cause a newt to float.

Did you put them in the same tank setup that they were accustomed to previously? How large is their tank, and what DOES it have in it? I assume they were put into totally different ("clean") water? All of this probably adds up to a big shock to their systems, and they reacted badly. I'm not sure why one decided to become a major bully, but if the tank is bare without hiding places, that would explain it.

The tank is bare and the one that died was the smallest of the three. The tank that they lived in at my school is the same that i brought home and that they are in now (same water, filter, and food). None of the axolotls are floating, the one that i think is dead is belly side up at the bottem. They are in the same tank setup as they were accostomed to previously.

I think you'd better take out the dead guy, Mallory. He's going to cause a nasty nitrite spike. Put him in something else if you want to observe him to be sure he's gone.

What temperature is the tank at?

By the way, why aren't you posting in the axolotl forum?

Sorry about not posting in the axie forum. I was looking around the site for the first time yesterday and when i saw the "start new thread sign", I just clicked on it, but it just happened to be the wrong forum

Also, thanks for giving me advise. I will check the water temperature later today, and keep it posted. THANKS
