I've been the proud keeper of Frasier and Daphnie since Aug.'02. They are Chinese Fire Belly Newts who have come along way and become very happy and healthy phibs. A month ago I noticed Daph missing a toe but was otherwise fine. Then Daph's tail began to "thin" half way down on the upper side. I'm waiting to discover her tail floating on the surface soon. I watched her shed the other day. It seemed to be a normal shed however it seems like some skin was left behind; bum, chin and -not positive- the eye area. I decided today to put her in the fridge for a few days until I can determine the proper cause of her condition. Frasier has been fine, thriving even. Fat too, I almost wonder if he is a she and is gravid. These two are my first newts, they mean a great deal to me and are irreplacable. All input will be appreciated.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
