Plant Fungus

Harlo,

Ok, recently i bought a windelov version of java fern stuck on to the drift wood. Everything was fine till i realised a few days later (today) that there were some white fluffy stuff on the drift wood. It's fungus no doubt and i'll like to know if it would cross over to the newts. So far my newts are fine and feeding like savages, no sign of illness or fungal growth on their bodies....yet.. Thank u, arigato, xiexie and maaf.

In most petshops you can buy product to "clean" plants. Don't know what it's called and I never had to use it myself.
But for a start I would get the driftwood with the fungus out. Put it in an empty tank till you can get it cured. You don't want to risk your newts good health, I'm sure.

Maybe if your very lucky you can just rub the fungus off and clean it in fresh water.

Another thing you could try as a final option. Seperate plant and wood and then boil the wood. Boiling driftwood is usually recommended to get dirt of/out, but that's normally only for "new" driftwood. It's a burden, but it might help. Your plant will grow on it again.

Hey, Xixzrro,

Thanx for the reply, some recommended to me using low con chlorine bleach and others reccomended KMnO4. Still others told me it's no big deal if the wood is a recent addition (which it is). The fungus is the hairy type, quite sparse and not the clumping type that forms a white sphere. I'll prolly rinse it under fresh water as u and a whole bunch of others recommended. Thanx.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
