HI
urm bit of a bother here but could anyone help with where i could purchase some black aquarium sand that's safe for axolotls, in the UK? Have been searching but no luck with it, would love to have some to go in my new 4ft tank when i get it :D
Thanks

Not sure why, but just to warn you black flourite sand was not recommended from the searching I've done. I can't find any definitive answers of why from searching this site, or others, but have found some members who seem pretty knowledgable about it claiming it isn't amphibian safe. Online was where I got my black sand, but unless you find a site like Dr. Foster and Smith who do set shipping rates it might get expensive.

I bought a Tahitian Moons sand which is safe for axies.

There is different type available apparently, hence you will get mixed messages about thahitian moon and its effect on PH etc - some say no way, some say ok

I asked about it myself a while ago - http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...ate/71202-suitability-tahitian-moon-sand.html

I bought this brand of Tahitian moon, and it is perfectly safe - CaribSea Super Naturals | Moonlight Sand | Tahitian Moon | Torpedo Beach | Rio Grand | Amazon | Ramblin Rose | Kon Tiki | Zebra | Peace River

As was advised, it in no way effected the water parameters, and has been great, i'm a big fan.

There are brands of tahitian moon which will effect you water and is not suitable for axies, so if you can, see if you can get the Caribsea. I got mine in Australia, and others in the US, so i'm sure you'll get it somewhere in the UK

Edit, i did a quick search on the Caribsea website 'cos i was curious - http://www.caribsea.com/locator/results_list.php?showonly=INT&tab=INT&country=UK&state=&city=&name=

Looks like heaps of places stock it

I also use the caribsea super naurals tahitian moon and i love it! i have never had a problem with my parameters or with the axies eating any. i don't know about getting it in the uk but if you can, i highly reccomend it.

Thank you all for your replies it's been a great help! i just had a look at that moon sand & it looks great :D thank you again for spending your time researching & posting this great info! :D

I think the issue/confusion comes from the fact that CaribSea has changed their Tahitian Moon sand in the past few years. It used to affect pH levels, but their new type is perfectly safe for amphibians.

does anyone have a detailed photo of tahitian moon sand with something for scale?

This picture kind of shows the size and texture of the sand. I'll see what else I can find.

i actually prefer to use Fluorite if theres gonna be live plants in the tank. It's black and the plants can use it.

ooh that's very pretty! Thanks for the pic!

I'm not sure if you have the chain store PetSmart in the UK but they sell the Tahitian moon black sand there. I think I read somewhere you have a chain similar (Pets at Home?). Good luck and if you do find some, I'd love to see pictures of it in use! I'm thinking that is the sand I want to get for my future axie.
