Okay, so I have done all my research on Japanese Fire Belly Newts and have been in the process of making their tank. So far I have about 7 inches of water in a 20 gallon long tank with plants and emergent rocks and stones. It is now cycling with a small filter and 5 guppies. Do I just wait now. Is an air-stone necessary. How long does the cycling take. Can I use the same water test kit I use for my saltwater reef tank? Please and thank-you.

If you're cycling, you can't do anything but wait.

An airstone isn't necessary as long as you have some agitation of the surface of the water. If your filter does this, then you don't need an airstone.

Cycling can take between 3 weeks and 3 months, depending on the size of the tank, the availability of ammonia, the temperature, etc.

Your saltwater kit may or may not work with fresh water. It probably says on the package, but you may have to contact the manufacturer and ask.

Thank you so much, Kaysie! :D
