Hello Everyone,

Where I live the tap water runs at a pH of 8 (maybe even a little higher...) and is very hard. Sushi has lived happily in these water conditions for the past 4 years, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with pH modifiers? The ones that API sells seem pretty legitatimate, but they lack detailed instructions. They pretty much say to add a certain amount and then adjust "as needed"...they dont mention how gradually you should alter the pH if the tank is already established with fish and they don't mention how often you need to add the chemicals to maintain a steady pH. I was just wondering if anyone might have an idea of what "as needed" means... Also, should I take out any fish before adding the chemicals?

The reason I ask is that I plan to acquire a new aquarium soon for aquatic frogs and was going to use some of Sushi's water, substrate, and filter media for the new tank so I don't have to cycle it. I'm just afraid that the pH of my tap water is too high for them. Sushi has never complained...

Thanks!
Aimee

I advise against chemical pH modification. Once you start doing it you run the risk of throwing your water chemistry all out of balance. Your pH and hardness is within standards for axolotls.
