I just had a question about PH levels. I have never done a PH test before but I have been reading how regular testing is very important for newt care. I purchased a test that is done with a dropper which is then put next to a chart - compared to test strips ( I did not see any at the store ) I have a Spanish ribbed newt who seems happy and healthy in the water condition that he is currently in. I did the test tonight and his water is sitting at roughly 7.6. (closer to 7.4) The box is telling me that this means the water is alkaline....I will be honest I have no clue what that means and if that is the right level for Desmond...If there is any way anyone could help me out with any information involving this, it would be greatly appreciated.

A pH of 7.4 - 7.6 is very close to neutral. Most newts are fairly tolerant of pH, with values of 6.0 - 8.0 being just fine for most species. Ribbed newts are very hardy and wouldn't expect them to have any special requirements.

The reason for testing pH is to monitor changes over time. For example, if the pH is gradually dropping, it usually means that more partial water changes are needed. Whatever you do, don't use those "pH up" and "pH Down" solutions to try to adjust the pH; these are a quick-fix that doesn't really fix anything.
