Hi,

I got a beautiful spotted salamander yesterday and I was wondering if it was ok to keep this species on paper towels to begin with so I can check it is in good health and eating etc. I know they normally like to dig into the substrate but I wanted to see if this was ok initially. Thanks

Well Make sure that the paper towel is moist enough and that he/she has plenty of place to hide as to not get stressed out.. Once that you have established its better to switch over to a substrate that is more natural for your Spotted. How Big is your spotted?

Thanks for the reply. She is about 4-5 inches long and a real stunner. I've put a little moss etc in with pieces of bark for the time being and she is safely hidden underneath them. The paper towels are certainly moist. I will put her onto a more suitable substrate soon. I just want to check that everything is alright with her.
