Hello,

I'm new here but think I may be using the forum quite a bit as it looks really useful. We have newts in the garden (smooth and great crested) and now looking to add some axolotls to our menagerie of dogs and pigs.

We have seen a couple of juvenile axolotls in a local pet shop. They are in a very small tank, on gravel and under lights. They have no hiding places in the tank. So we want to "rescue" them but are fairly limited in tank selection given space available in the coolest part of the house.

This one fits the bill size-wise but I've read some reviews about the manufacturer recommending complete filter change every month. Is this because they want to sell more stuff or do the filters really need changing monthly? Would the tank allow us to use a different filter (one that needs cleaning but not changing) instead?

Are real or plastic plants better for axolotl health and enrichment?

Finally, any thoughts on whether the panoramic nature of the tank would unsettle the axies?

Sorry to bombard you with questions, we've both kept tropical fish before and I've had a Whites tree frog but axies are new to us and we want to make sure we do it properly.

Many thanks in advance.

My filter instructions say to change monthly as well, But I just clean the filter and never clean the place where the bacteria colony is growing. The problem is, If you change a filter cartridge monthly, It kills the nitrifying bacteria that live in the filter and therefore kills your tanks cycle. And then you have to cycle the tank again, which can take another month.

That's great, thank you, we'll do that!
And sorry for posting in the wrong forum, pressed the wrong button :(

Lots of super questions :)

I rarely 'cleaned ' my filter. I would rinse out the contents in the water I took out at water changes..just to get rid of any detritus. If the sponges got really horrible I would swap one at a time for a new one, so as not to upset the good bacteria.

Below is a link to our Axolotl Org. It has some useful basic information.

Also have a good read through the axolotl sections. At the top of the page, there is a search button that you can type in any key words, this will bring up previous posts that may be useful.

Welcome to the forum :D
