Need advice on how to make my newt tank more natural..

I have had a breeding pair of paddletail newts for about 2 years now.. all is going great.. I have even had spawning going on. But Their tank is so plain and boring. I want to create a NATURAL looking setting.. I have NO idea where they come from in the wild, But am sure it would make them happier..not just having it look good for ME..

Right now they are in a 20 gal tall. With about 15 gals of water, a large plastic shelf, and a few fake plants.. I had LOTS of live plants but ALL of the plants have not only died, but desolved in the water..not good.

ANyone have a clue as to where I can start?? How do I get the plants to LIVE?? Is there a trick to it??

Any and all advice is greatly welcomed.

Thanks

Have a look on Henk Wallays Moscow site (in the links page on the home page here). The article is on pachytriton C, but I would think it could give you some ideas. P. labiatus come from China.
How did you get them to breed (temps etc.) and also what are the dimensions of a 20 gal tank.

I didnt try.. My tank was around 65 degrees for most of the winter, so that may have helped.. But I watched the male wrap himself around my adult female.. No eggs were ever laid.. Maybe if I can create a better setup..

Thanks.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
