One of my Paramesotriton hongkongensis juveniles (about a year old) has fallen foul to the Paramesotriton problem of incompete shedding. I mannaged to let their setup get a little too dry, and one of them failed to slough the skin at the end of the tail. I should have noticed it, but didn't. The end of the tail became infected and dropped off easily when I inspectes it. The end is now reddened on the sides of the tail (inflamation) and slightly white (I assume necrotic) on the end. About the bottom fifth has dropped off. I've been treating with topically applied baytril for two days, keeping him on wet paper towel substrate, changed every two days. The wound does not seem to be progressing, but nor does it seem to be improving greatly. Would an amputation of the infected tip be worthwhile? Apart from looking slightly underweight, and a bit sluggish the animal is OK (not bloated or ulcerated etc). Being very shy, I am unsure it'll eat in the hospital setup, but there was some faeces on the paper this morning, so I assume that it ate recently.
Any ideas are welcome
