Hello there,

My P. brevipes has some sort of wound on its back where the tail meets the body on the opposite side of the cloaca. I'm not sure how he got this, it looks like a stab. I recently moved him to a 30 gallon tank and kept him in a smaller 10 gallon meanwhile with no lid besides duct tape used to make an extended rim to keep him from getting out. Anyway I think my cat stuck her paw in to try to grab him and maybe stabbed her claw into him . He eats normally and hasn't showed any disturbances or signs of pain.

So I was hoping someone could tell me what action to take to help him out because it is an open wound and I don't want it to catch an infection. Anything is helpful .
Thanks in advance

-Frank

Make sure the water quality is good and the aninmal isn't too stressed. It should heal on its own, but keep an eye on it. If it doesn't appear to be healing, or seems infected, try to get it to a vet or post again on the forum for advice.

Incidentally, the newt looks like Pachytriton labiatus, rather than P. brevipes.

That was my first though when I got him but a few minutes after putting him in his tank his coloring changed and got lighter showing the black spots. He seems to change his color a lot, maybe a sign of stress? I was surprised because he looks just like my other P. labiatus, He's in his own separate tank though.

Today I took a look at the wound and saw that it closed and appears to be healing ok. Sorry for the panic but I was afraid he wouldn't make it.

Thanks for the tips froggy

And thanks otterwoman for the link it is really helpful

I'm glad everything is going well.
