Our axolotl spent four months in the outdoor pond in our garden. We were very excited when we moved him out in May but everything went so fine! During those months he became a grown-up axolotl and we found out that he really is male . He gained more weight and length even though he didn't seem to eat anything for the first two weeks. This was perhaps because of the change in the conditions and the water temperature which was first only +9 Celsius. Later in the summer the temperature was just perfect (+16/+19) and the conditions otherwise were also wonderful for him. When it became dark in the evening he started to swim wildly around the big pool and chase all kinds of tiny creatures under and above the water. There were also a couple of wild frogs trying to use the same pool for cooling off themselves but I think that the axolotl was the king of the pond after all. He has now lived indoors in an 140 litre-aquarium by himself. He seems to be quite social and comes to greet anybody who approaches the aquarium. We have established a wormery to get live worms for him in the winter. In these photos you can see his "summer residence" out-of-doors (he is hiding in his cave in the picture) and the aquarium indoors where he is absolutely not hiding any more.
