We just changed the substrate from large rocks to black sand a few days ago. I think it looks especially beautiful with leucistics. Also we got a new baby from Alana yesterday...! He is very healthy and active, hopefully when he gets older and goes in with whoops they will get along.

Black sand looks good. Goes well with your very beautiful axie

Thanks so much for your comments! I was a little worried about black sand because it's hard to spot poop, but we've been able to see it pretty well and get it with the turkey baster. The new axie, Saxaboom, is a melanoid. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good substrate with melanoids? We were going to put some nice slabs of granite in the tank to make a little hidey place (right now there's just sand and plants). Maybe a lighter colored granite. He's so little though! I'll post pics soon. ;-)

I am also considering swapping my large rocks for sand, possibly even black also. Are you happy with the choice? I am largely swayed by the promise of easier cleaning!

Looks great.

I would suggest black sand. The blood worms are easy to spot and poop isn't too hard either. I was considering natural sand but truthfully I like the contrast with darker substrate. I would recommend it so far...:p

What a great contrast, and a truly beautiful axolotl

The sand looks great! I have never actually seen black sand. It's always blue and green colours.
It's good you can still spot the poop and the bloodworms.
Maybe you have just started a new trend :)
