Our oldest Tylototriton

He's 5 and we think it's a male
For the moment he's sharing the tank with 3 Cynops orientalis (woww good sight), he's essentialy on the land but sometimes has a bath

It seems to me that you are mistaken... your newt is female.
By the way, is the length of the amphibian more 6.5 inches? And have you watched that your Tylototriton verrucosus was trying to devour your Cynops orientalis?

How can you see it's a female without have seen its cloaca ? We may had a mistake

Its lengh is 19 cm (7.5 inches)and it has never been aggressive with Cynops (it 's rarely in the water)

I have judged about the sex of the newt by two characteristic features for female of the species: long enough tail and big size of body.
I ask other tylototriton-keepers of our forum to resolve my doubts: the photos of cloaca are dubious.
I keep Tylototriton more 2 years and this species is difficult (for me) in the determination of the sex of animal by cloaca shape... Therefore I am guided by secondary sexual features (long enough tail and big size of body).
It's enough important information for me: I am going to bred this species (in Russia they are much in demand).

Judging from the overall shape of the animal it could well be a female. But I've also seen males with this body shape. The only way to be sure of it's sex is indeed opening the cloaca.

And I too agree that mixing verrucosus with C. orientalis is a very bad idea. If hungry an adult verrucosus can devour a small orientalis.

Thanks for your answers.
Next time we 'll catch it, we'll try to open its cloaca.
Our Tylototriton will change of tank soon, we have just got 4 youthfull verrucosus and we're just waiting for them to grow up enough before making Tylototriton's own tank ( our 3 C. orientalis are too big to be devoured, they have been mixed for 10 monthes and Tylototriton is enough fed but we 're going to separate them soon, it's a promise
