1. take the goldfish out of the axolotl's tank, no fish should be in the tank with him/her.
2. remove those pebbles and put in new ones that are either about the size of your fist, or else get sand or barebottom tank.

Hi, they can get up to 12 inches I think. Let me explain this a little nicer. The golds fish will nibble on the axie gills cause them stress and most likely they will get fungus. The axies will also try and eat the gold fish. They will try and eat any thing. When they eat they might, will at some point eat some of those pebbles that are in it's tank. They will get stuck in the axies cause all kind of problems. You could use play sand or pool filter sand for the bottom. I just changed mine to a bare bottom tank it is vary easy to clean.

Hi and thanks for the advise
We have had large goldfish in the tank for 6 yrs now with no issues .
We also regularly buy small goldfish for him to eat (he ate 3 yesterday,wont eat now for about a week)..
He has been eating small goldfish for about 5 yrs now,we also feed him live worms with no issues,his gills have always been healthy and he IS the boss of the tank,not afraid to attack the larger goldfish if they annoy him,he also has plenty of spots in tank to hide.
We have removed small pebbles from tank and will continue to monitor large fish and his gills

I have to confirm what Tracey writes. I got my lotls in the first place as goldfish control for my tank. The goldfish never did seem to nibble at the axolotls' gills - but they did stand in direct competiton for food. Of course, at that time some of the goldfish were as large as the axolotls.

Tracey has been doing this much longer than I have and so all I really have to say is, the pebbles really could pose a problem. Even if it has never happened before, it only takes one time, really. And other than that - lovely axolotls you have there.

I wouldn't worry about the fish if you have been keeping them together for that length of time. Axolotls can grow up to 14 inches.

43cm-17 inches seems to be the largest axolotl seen by a credible witness.

He's a good size, while axolotls continue to grow throughout their life he will probably not grow much more.
