Hi

I'm considering getting an axolotl, I have a 29 gallon planted aquarium with no lid. I also have bright lights (more than 4 watts per gallon). Would an axolotl be suitable for this type of of aquarium or would they climb out? Also, do bright lights bother axolotls?

Thanks,
Chris

The don't climb, but they will occasionally jump. Can you keep the water level several inches below the top? How do you have lights over the tanks but without a lid?

How many inches should the water be from the top?

The lights have legs that rest on the top edges of the tank.

The water should be around 3 or 4 inches from the top.

I was thinking about your tank and the hard work you have probably put into it, being a planted tank. You do realise that axolotls snuffle around in the substrate and will more than likely uproot any plants. They are also not the most elegant of creatures and will swim into and through plants.

Are all your plants OK at lower temperatures?

By the way I would love to see photos of your tank!

Why don't you just use a mesh covering as a lid? It prevents the axie jumping out, allow the tank to be cooled via natural evaporation, cheap and easy to assemble and still alllow you to view the axie.
