I heard from someone that the water temp usually runs 10 degrees lower than the room temperature. I have reptiles in my bedroom (they don't require heat lamps) and their temperature gauge is reading 72.5 F or 22.5 C for the room temp. The aquarium water is reading 72.1 F or 22.3 C. Does that sound right? I know the tank temp needs to be lower so I am thinking of lowering the room temp and getting low end heat bulbs for the reptiles. I don't mind my room being cold :)

Also, is a air stone or bubbler thing necessary for an axolotl tank? I have heard that some like it but I worry it will stress out the baby that I will be getting too much. I know that the water needs to be oxygenated and I worry that my filter might not be oxygenating it enough :-/

Ten degrees lower? That would be difficult to achieve without a fan or chiller. In order to get the water temp lower than the air temp, you need evaporation. This can be achieved by having a screen lid. Adding a fan with a screen lid might get you down by 10 degrees F (but you'll also have to do more water addition and changes to deal with the high rate of evaporation).

I have a screen lid. Thanks for the article! I just don't get how I am going to lower it that much, and now I am concerned about summer. There is no where else I can move the tank. We don't have a basement... Also how can I attach a pic without it being an URL?

I have read off of axolotl.org that the temp needs to be between 50-68F. If I lower the room temp to 65 would that help? I just need to figure out what I am going to do when summer comes around... :-(

What is a water cooler that people recommend?

That would be great for the axolotl, but just be sure your reptiles can tolerate that temperature as well.

I would buy heat bulbs for them. Looks like the only way to make everyone happy :) I want them all to be happy, healthy, and I want them all to have the best!

Also, when summer comes around you could invest in a small room air conditioner. I keep all my caudates in my bedroom and it was well worth it for only ~100 dollars. That being said, it would only be practical if your room didn't get/stay very hot for a long period of time (there are way cheaper cooling methods). My room is upstairs, so it would stay hot during the summer for a long period of time if I didn't use an air conditioner (and would require much more extensive effort to keep them cool without one).

One thing that helped my tank stay cool in the summer is I had it on a bottom shelf of a stand closer to the floor since I don't have a basement either. I set the stand over the cool air return vent. It then was cooled by the constant cool air flow. The lower it is the cooler it will be.

What kind of air conditioner? I put a fan on my tank and the water is now at 67.1 F or 19.5 C. Where as my reptiles are still at 72!
