Hi all,

Recently I got back from a three day trip to realise one of my axolotls has lost a leg! They are both young, about 10-12 cm, but my leucistic one is slightly smaller. They are kept in a 75 litre tank (for now, I'll move them to a new tank or separate them later). I feed them once every three days, but perhaps that isn't enough for the agressive one, who bites my fingers whenever I stick then near his head. Anyway, I put my injured one in a floating tub at the top of the tank filled with water, so the axolotl is separated. But I was wonderingif there was anything else I could do for her?

Thank you in advance.

Here's her in the plastic tub. I haven't seen any signs of stress.

All right never mind this, I got a divider and she seems far happier.

sounds like you've got it sorted with the divider. Just wanted to add that axolotls actually do not have the neurological ability to be aggressive. Nipping is usually caused by underfeeding, maybe try to up their food a bit, feed however much they will take, personally I feed daily but that's just what works for me :)

Thanks for the advice. Poor Citrine died which is terrible, which we think was caused by a nitrite spike. We gave her a burial. Fixed the nitrite problem too. By the way, how much do you feed your axolotls, and what food?

I'm so sorry to hear that! I feed about one large european nightcrawler daily or every second day and if he still seems hungry I'll feed more. I kinda just play it by ear and watch his behaviour and learn when he's hungry.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
