I want to get an axolotl. I've keept cold water fish for years and my plan is to get a seperate tank for one axolotl. Im intending to get a small ClearSeal tank, with an internal filter that attatches to the inside glass and will also spray water illiminating the need for an air pump, although I have an old one that I could fix up if needed. I've used an internal filter before and it was great, fluval brand I think.

My presumtion is that it's ok to use fish tank ornaments with axies? How about drift wood?

In my area, if you're lucky enough to find a pet shop that knows what an axolotl is or has one, they are usually about 4" long already, my big question is...

How small a tank can one Axolotl live in on his own?

I think everyone here agrees that the absolute smallest tank to accommodate one adult axolotl is a 10 gallon aquarium. Though I've heard a lot of people say that at least 15-20 gallons is best.

And as far as I know most, if not all, ornaments for a fish aquarium are safe for your axies. I believe drift wood is safe too, though you should probably wait to see what others have to say as I'm fairly new to axolotls as well

Hey Billie Welcome to the forum! Avoid Grape Vine for ornaments. Grape vine will fowl the water conditions and you sure don't want that

When you get your Axie, please post pictures, we here at the Forum loves Axolotl pictures ^_^ Good luck!

Welcome to the forum Billie. The larger the tank the easier it is to maintain water quality and temperature. So while you can keep an axolotl in a 10 gallon tank, I would advise to buy as large a tank that you have room for/can afford.
