I've been looking at some fantastic photos of Ommatotriton vittatus and have been trying to find care info. Is this a challenging species to rear and maintain? Is it commonly available?

Cheers

Alan

Of all the newt species that have ever been bred in captivity, this one is one of the most difficult - perhaps the most difficult. Consequently, they are not commonly available. I know many very experienced newt keepers (including me) that have had them unexpectedly die, both as juveniles and as adults. They have some very different requirements than their Triturus kin. If you enjoy having successful experiences keeping and breeding newts, my advice is avoid them!

O.vittatus is extremely rare in the trade....really extremely so xD
o_Ophryticus is much more common, at least in europe, but they too are quite complicated...definitely a pro species in my opinion.

I should have said... my answer was addressing both species of Ommatotriton. The ones I mismanaged were ophryticus not vittatus.

Hello. I just noticed two notches, white small bubbles on the hind legs of one of my male newts.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
