Hi everyone,

I am new here, and I decided to write this post because I have some questions and I cannot find answers to them. I have two adult axolotls - wild female and leucistic male. I bought them 13 months ago, when they were about 6 cm long. Now they are fully grown, and seem to be in good overall condition. Last sunday (17.11.2007) I found some eggs in a tank. I moved them to a separate tank, bought some brine shrimp eggs, and so far things seem to be ok - embrios in eggs are developing, and I am just checking what's the hatching rate of artemias (if they don't hatch well, I will look for some daphnia for my larvae). Still I am wondering about some things...
I think my adult axies must be about 15 to 18 months of age now. It was the first breeding for them, so perhaps I shouldn't expect too much of my female, but she laid only about 20 eggs. Is it normal for the first time? And the second thing is the frequency of breeding. When do they usualy breed again after laying eggs? Should I separate the female from the male to give her some rest?
Thanks for answers.

She may lay more over the next few days.

If they have started breeding, most people find that they will breed continuously (leading to thousands of offspring). If this is the case, then I would separate the female.

For some reason I thought that they would produce eggs maybe twice a year. My female was barely a year old when she suprised us the first time, then she repeated the suprise a month later. I chose to re- home her as I was very concerned for her health if she was to produce more..I have now found out that the new owner has now had a suprise batch now from her...the 3rd in 4 months. I also know of some whose axoltl have never produced eggs.
