And heres a T vulgaris

Not as nice looking as they would be in the spring-summer, but Im glad to have them in the garden, just the same.
Both photos were taken by torchlight.

What night time temperatures are you getting down there Morg? we have had a couple of nights touch freezing now.
have you noticed a temperature barrier for them being active?

Night time temperature has been as low as -1c here, but is usually at around 4-5c.
The coldest night was the only night I saw no newt action.
As the weather cools down though, I have come across no newts underneath overturned logs or rocks through the day.
They now spend the daytime in the underground hibernicular, which is shared by both the cristatus and vulgaris.

thanks

i might go for a look see one night this week... I'll check up on all those larvae too, see if they have done anything.

Cheers

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
