Those newts really are beautiful. It's a shame something so incredible is endangered. Thanks for the picture:D.

Nathan,

I think endangered might be a bit strong of a word.....these newts may just have a very restricted range and their habits keep them hidden most of the time.

Oh, sorry, I was under the impression that N.meridionalis was listed as an endangered species on the IUCN red list.

It is listed as endangered.
http://www.iucnredlist.org/search/details.php/59452/all

Listed as Endangered because its area of occupancy is probably less than 500 km², its distribution is severely fragmented, and the extent of its breeding habitat, the number of sub-populations, and the number of mature individuals, in southern United States and northeastern Mexico is declining.

But see the link for more info

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
