I found a Notophthalmus viridescens (eastern newt) outside my house in the marsh by my creek(my house is in PRIME newt ground). he/she is still half red so I am assuming it is fairly juvenile, and i wonder, is the Half terrestial/half aquatic setup that he is in suitable? i transplanted some moss from the surrounding area. this is the first Notophthalmus viridescens i have seen in the wild here(northern ontario). please help. i am unsure of how to house him/her properly.

should i just model the location i found him in?
moving water, under a log pressed into mud - cold spring fed stream..

You may want to try a half land, half water set-up to see how he/she reacts to land and water. It will probably be more land-based if it's not a full adult yet. But there should be some water present so it can keep moist. Provide alot of hiding areas too, my newts like to crawl out of water on a rock that is covered in wet java moss.

ok thank you. i was trying 1/3 water to start with. i just wanted some positive confirmation that im not harming him/her or whatever.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
