I have 2 aproximately 3 inch red efts in a 10 gallon aquarium with 1/2 water, 1/2 land. I used large and small stones and put a good 2 inches of coconute fiber bedding on top that for the land side. I have a gradual slope and put stones all around the water side. The water is maybe an inch to inch and a half deep. I witnessed one of them run through and it's enough water that they can stick their head out without the stones but their bodies are fully submerged. One eft that I've had for about a month has a darker color on top. He used to be bright red. So I just wait for them to turn green and hang out in the water? I have a few one inch red efts also. Do the little guys always look so lean? I'm providing fruit flies and super tiny sugar ants(these are smaller than the typical ones.) I also have baby pillbugs/isopods, red wigglers in the enclosure. I am looking into spring tails but don't have them yet. These are my first newts and salamander but I have other reptiles and amphibians I've had a while.

You can see the color difference in those 2 pics.
The little ones are about this size maybe a little bigger.
