I've read that Notophthalmus are especially susceptible to fungal infection, and that a lifespan in captivity may be as short as 3 years. I know from reading threads here that some of you have had success keeping these newts nearly 20 years. So here is a question for the "pros". What are the three most important tricks to keeping these newts happy and healthy. I am familiar with the basic requirements (water changes, temps below 70 C), but I'm hoping to avoid disease altogether. Thanks.

I've kept mine in captivity about 5 years, and I don't do anything special but water changes, I never check the chemistry, and feeding them earthworms. I have a lot of plants in there, mostly java moss at this point.

I never heard of such a thing....but if you want to avoid diseases....CB animals are the way to go....

I don't anything special and I have had mine for about 8 years now and they breed all the time.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

sorry I am having a hard time trying to upload the pictures- I have them saved on my hard drive... any suggestions-the prompts here are not allowing for downloads that way as far as I can tell. Thanks
