I have had a run in wih fungus like many people that have these newts. After trying everything I could think of doing with water chemistry I still lost 3 of my newts. Desperate I did what I had to do. I went to a store I never go into. Petco!!! Here I found Kordon brand Rid Fungus 100% organic fungal treatment. It claimed to be reef tanks safe. Reef tanks are very sensitive. With nothing left to lose I put the 10 drops per gallon of water. Two days later I am happy to say the fungus as far as I can tell is 100% gone and my newts are feeding again. It did cost me about 15 dollars but it has been worth it. The ingredient list claims multiple natural herbals and 7% Naphthoquinone. I have yet to test it on anyother species of salamander. But salvation for my Noto's was found in of all places petco.

This makes sense but I would use it sparingly. Napthoquinone comes in many forms. One of the more common in nature is as juglone, the defensive chemical exuded by Black Walnut trees to kill off competing plants.

I was forced into useing it. I do not know it's affects on other slamanders but I was force against the wall. I had lost 4 animals and had to think outside the box. I knew of another member who had almost lost all of their animals. I was ready to try anything. Salt baths and black water extract was not working. I forgot to say that I also added a water softing pillow to the tank.

I agree! Sometimes you have to do what you have to do! I have since added this product to my emergency chest.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
