Okay so i've never owned an Axolotl before but i've been researching them and they seem like a wonder to own! Anyways so theres this website that sells Leucistic Axolotls and it says
" Approximate Length: 4 to 5 inches"
I've read that they grow up to 8-10 inches so i'm a little confused. Are the Axolotls that this website sell juveniles? Or are they just 5 inches full length forever?

Another question, sorry! But what type of water filter should i buy for my axolotl?
And also, is the food they eat easy to obtain? Like can i buy it at Petsmart/Petco?

That is all for now :) I'm pretty excited to own one!

They probably mean a juvinlie, but if you are going to buy an axolotl this site is your best bet, and I feed my axolotls Canadian nightcrawlers you can get at Walmart and frozen bloodworms you can get at Petco and they love them. I hope you enjoy your new axolotl! :)

Also before you buy you really really need to check the temperature in your house/where you will be keeping the tank, I suggest (if you don't yet have a tank) filling a rubbermaid container with water and checking the temperature in that after a couple hours. axies need cooler water, around 66 would be ideal otherwise you'll need a chiller and those get really pricey!

A canister filter or hang on the back filter would probably be best. Just get something with not to much flow but ok filtration. Axolotls can get stressed by to much flow. Everything else was mostly covered by others but i recommend you read up a little more. It will help you a lot.? Last, this website is probably ,as said before, the best place to get an axolotl. That website you quoted (UR)gave me a 2 inch wildtype with only one leg when i ordered a 5in melanoid. They only offered me a small amount of in store credit in return. I won't order an axolotl from them again.?

Omg, totally buy your Lotls from a breeding member on Caudata. I got my 5 adorable and Oh So cute babies from a member on Here. They were 2 to 3 inches long. It's been about three months, and they are now all almost 7" long!! These guys are total little Porkers!! The breeder packaged them beautifully and everyone arrived 100% intact except for some minor gill nippage. I keep reading nothing but horror stories about people's commercially bought Axolotl. They are either internally unhealthy, kept in horrible conditions or just flat out die after a couple weeks in their new home. All the can say is, DONT DO IT!!!
From what I've found about the breeders on this very site "Caudata" They care about their critters so they are going to be healthier than anything from some craptastic pet shop. God, if I thought it would stop you from buying from a petstore, I'd offer you one of my sub adults. But those are my babies :p

Instead, go here :frog:
For Sale, Give-Away or Trade - FS: USA at Caudata.org Newt and Salamander Portal

Look for people's reputation under the user name. Both Bette and Seagull have great reps and I believe they have Lotls for sale :) and trust me, they grow FAST!!!

Also, before you get one, two or twenty :D be sure to read the sick Axolotl section. Prevention is always better than reaction. In other words, keep up with water changes and the right food, read other people's horror stories and you should be fine. Learn what to do and how to prevent anything befor it happens :) but honestly, these guys aren't that hard to keep. Just do what your supposed to!

With that said, Axolotls are friggen awesome!! And that's coming from a 35 year old! :p

Thanks for all the replies :) You guys are great! Very informative too. I will begin the cycling process tomorrow when i buy all the aquarium equipment to ensure that his home is safe for him.

What's your opinion on sponge filters with the air pump? Are they good for Axolotls? I saw a video from the AxolotlWhisperer on YouTube and that's what he recommends but i just wanna make sure.

@allied123, I'll test my water temperature as soon as i can. I've seen aquarium chiller prices..yikes! I'll try using a fan if i don't reach a well enough temperature and see how that works. What about frozen bottles of water? I saw a YouTube video showing that as a way to chill the water.

frozen bottles work but it's really not ideal... I did it last summer but you really need to change the bottles out every few hours, which if you're home all day is fine! but I had a job where I was gone for 8 hours a day and that temperature swing from 66 when I left the house to nearly 74 when I got home was really bad for them. There's also diy chiller things with mini fridges and things like that but really when you need a lot of chilling reliably it's probably best to invest in a good chiller. And sponge filters are great for axolotls! low flow and all, I don't personally use them but plenty of other people do, just make sure it's an appropriate size for your tank (better to have one that's rated for double your tank size) but also keep in mind you still need to spot clean poopy because the sponge filter will really only provide biological filtration.

FYI, If you don't want to use one of those spong filters (I'm not a fan of them unless it's just n my shrimp tank, shrimp produce Little waste!!) I bought a Sun Sun canister filter off Amazon for about 50 bucks. It's for up to 75-100 gallon turtle tank with the water pump being outside of the water. but I have it running on a full 40 gal. It comes with a spray bar. I have the spray bar facing the back of the tank, so there is little to no water movement. The same company makes canister filters for smaller tanks as well and they run about 20-30$. It's a small difference in price in comparison with the spong filters. And you really are better off going bigger when you first start off. I learned the hard way with my fish..
Having been one of those people who has spent 130.00 on a marineland canister filter for my 55gal community fish tank. I don't see one difference in performance between the Marinland and Sunsun type filters. Well, I see a price difference, but not a filtration difference. :D
Actually, there was a difference... The Sunsun canister filter came with UV filtration as well.. :kill:

I could very well be blind, but I'm not seeing if you mentioned what size tank you are going to use?

But for cooling, eBay has some good prices on Hang on back reef aquarium cooling fans. I use a 10" desk fan on my 40g and it cools the tank by about 14 degrees. (Walmart 8bucks) But I also have 3/4 inch insulating foam taped to the back and sides on my tank(Lowes 20bucks) On days when it hits 90-95* I plan to enclose all 4 sides in foam, use a combination of water bottles, the insulating foam and the fans. I tried this method on the 55gal I'm currently cycling, only half filled) It was 78* in my room, same water temp (insane winter!). With the combination of of two, 6" fans, the outer tank walls being covered with 1" insulating foam (available at lows, pricey, but still cheaper than a chiller :) and 3, 20 ounce frozen water bottles to start. I lowered the temp fast as I just wanted to see if I'd be able to maintain a low temp. It took about 3 hours to drop it down to about 62* and one water bottle about every 4-6 hours to maintain a temp of 62-65 Keep in mind, the more water surface you have the faster and easier you'll be able lower the temp. What would we do without Evaporation? :D

Btw, while you're cycling your tank. Use an aquarium heater, bump up the temp to about 78-80 degrees. This will help speed up the cycling process :) and if you can, get some seed bacteria. ie: A friends used filter media, some gravel from an established tank, even plants. If I thought the benificial bacteria would survive, I'd ship you some from my Lotl tank. But I don't think it will.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, and I'll ship it to Gummy13.

I used Seachems Excel, established filter media, gravel, plants and shrimp pellets to start my cycle. 3weeks, and it's done, but I want a stronger bacteria bed, so I'm going to wait another three weeks :)

I suppose I can give you some floating plants to help get it going? I don't mind :D not like I don't have enough lol

If you think I can help you, just Pm me :D
Also, Lmk if you would like a small container of azzola (fairy moss) and a couple dwarf water lettuce. it's great stuff for blocking out light and loaded with Benificial bacterias. It should give you a good start :) and grows fast
Lmk know what size tank you have and I'll see what I can do :D

Cheers!
