recently my filter has been very very noisy. at night if i do not shut the living room door, i basically can hear all the noises in my room. i've read up some other sites, n they say that there is sand trap in it. could that be the cause of the rattling? or i should get a new filter?
or is there any filter that does not pick up the sands in my aquarium??

cheers

Most filters can be easily disassembled and cleaned. Take it apart, pull out the impeller, give all the motorized pieces a good scrub.

I don't know what kind of filter you have. I have an external (canister) filter. If it makes noise, it is because of one of two reasons, both of them being that it is having trouble getting water through the tubes. Cause 1 would be that the filter is clogged with icky stuff, in which case you have to turn it off (switch the tubes to "off" and/or put a bucket under them to catch the water!) and then rinse the different parts of the filter out. Cause 2 would be that a hose has slipped off of its connection, in which case you just have to push it back into place - if its end is frayed, you just have to cut off a little bit of it and then push it back on to the filter.

Of course I do not know what kind of filter you have, so this may be useless information.

i've no idea how to describe my filter. it submerge in the water, with 2 sponge underneath.

I think that's what they call a "sponge filter".

Hello Lazylilsnoop,

i've no idea how to describe my filter. it submerge in the water, with 2 sponge underneath.

If it can be submerged into the water then it is more than likely an internal filter. You will have to do as Kaysie suggested. Clean out the impeller (the part where the filtered water comes out) because if it is clogged by sand, it will cause that rattling noise. Also, if the impeller is too far above the surface of the water, this will also cause that annoying sound.
