Hello!
I've posted before. I fished about 69 Long-Toed salamander larvae out of my pool cover this spring. I've sucessfully (I hope) released 64 of them once they morphed. Three died, unfortunately (but I think 3/69 is fairly good?) One only morphed, finally, a few weeks ago. And it's Canada, it's already getting freezing at night. I didn't feel comfortable letting him go in such cold weather, so I've kept him. I'm attaching a picture. I realize his little home is kind of small, but I'm in the process of moving and have nothing to put him in for the time being. It's only temporary. Anyway, he seems to be doing good. I'm just curious, though... the other ones that had morphed either morphed and right away had a yellow stripe on their back, or very very soon after developed it. As I said, this little guy has been morphed for at least 2 weeks and still doesn't have a stripe. He does have a few little yellow spots now, though that he doesn't have in the photo. Will he get a stripe or do some of them just not get stripes at all and only have yellow dots? He -is- a Long-Toed, yes? Eventually, probably after I get him into a better home, I'll see if I can get a pic of his underside so I can get someone to tell me if he really is a he!
