Im posting this for a friend. She has 2 axolotls in a tank she recently had a spike in nitrite when she got it back down she noticed her lecustic baby is not eating and her gills are near nothing. Could something else being going on or maybe does she have nitrite poisoning? She's currently a temp bucket with daily water changes. Her other axolotl still in the tank is doing great!

first off, she’s very thin, what has she been eating?? if it just been bloodworms, i’d start chopping up earthworms for her
her gill filaments are gone. burned off, most likely. her diet needs to be upped immediately to help with growth

Sorry I should have added she is on earthworms her appetite is just gone so she tried bloodworms again. Do you think the burnt gills is from that spike? Will they grow back should we visit a vet and is she just suffering. I myself have 2 for years I've given all the advise I can gave and just don't know what more to do

i would take her to a vet in this instance. she likely is suffering, but that’s not really anyones fault, so go easy on your friend. i think the burned gills are because of the spike, yes
