Hello,

I was under the impression that newts and salamanders with the exception of axolotls were unavailable in Australia is this true? Do you need a Licence to keep them? I would be very interested if someone could direct me to a good website or share some of the basics with me. I already have a few axolotls and have for years, are newts and salamanders harder to care for???

Thanks.

No licences or anything, sadly. Because we have so many natives and QIAS is so determined to protect our borders, the only sals we get are axies, and you can't even import new stock into the country from them! If you want a sal-ish experience, OCCASIONALLY you'll get a morph-olotl, but make sure you're getting it from someone who knows what they're doing (i.e., morphing them before sexual maturity to give them a chance at living more than ten months), and is morphing from morph-able lines (There are a few around, it's really a matter of keeping your ears perked for news of them).

Thank you for the info!

Its so disappointing we cant have them in Australia. I am all for the protection of our native wildlife but its so annoying!!! Arg! I have seen one in a pet shop just a month ago. I have herd that it is extremely stressful for axolotls to morph so have never tried it. Such a shame!!
