A few weeks ago I adapted 3 subadult c. e. popei to a semi aquatic tank. Right now 2 have become aquatic, but only during the daytime; at night, they just stay on the floating cork bark. Is this normal for younger newts? The tank is full of java moss and there is about 7 inches of water. Its not too much of a concern for me but I'm just curious to why they do this.

Lots of newts will come out the water at night. As long as they are in the water during the day, acting and feeding normally, I wouldn't worry. You will probably find that as they mature they will come out less at night and eventually just sit near the surface with the head out of the water sometimes.

I've found C.e.popei to be generally less aquatic than all of the other species I own. Even as adults, they like to hang out on the floating plants with their upper body/head above the water, and are frequently on top of the cork bark float.

That is very interesting. Now I'm glad I built a large land area in the paludarium I recently set up for them.

My newts are always out of the water at night probably to rest from a long day of swimming :p as long as they are eating well and are in the water during the day i think your newts are perfectly healthy
