I have a skinny red-spotted newt whom I tried to feed a waxworm to today. It was the first time I've tried waxworms. He bit it, he had half the thing in his mouth (took an hour before so) and then gave up and spat it out. It seems he has a small mouth. Any normal-sized worm or waxworm he can't grasp and eat. What can I do about this? Could I just cut all his food in half?

Can a newt have a "small" mouth? My other newts of the same size could eat this thing in an instant. They are all the same size, except for fatness.

I don't think this is a size of the mouth issue. It is more likely because the newt just doesn't have the energy to work so hard to swallow something so large.

I was reading about "lesser waxworms" earlier. How big are they, and could they work?
