OK, so friday afternoon, I bought a couple Cynops pyrrhogaster that I was surprised the pet store had. I have been looking for a local source of newts for a while. They were not housed in the best setup and I could tell they were not being cared for well (they were housed in about an inch of water with fire belly toads:mad:). I shouldn't have given in, but I impulsively bought 2 of them since I have been looking so hard to find some. They were only 3 a piece too so I couldn't help myself. The 2 I got appeared healthy, however one of them had some skin coming off his tail which i noticed after buying them. I placed them in the setup which is pretty much 50/50 with about 4 inches of water in the deep end. I fed them some freeze dried bloodworms and also tried feeding some freeze dried gammarus, but they were uninterested in eating. I thought maybe the stress of the new home may have been the cause or that they were used to other foods, so I paid little attention to this. I left sunday morning and when I got back lastnight, I noticed they were both dead and had white fungus all over them. One of them had what looked like open wounds in the skin like the skin had rotted away in those spots. I felt horrible. The air conditioner broke and it shot the temp up to the 80s. My question is, would they have gotten sick even if the AC had been working? can fungus grow that fast, or did they mostly develop this before I bought them? was this directly my fault, or was it bound to happen given their conditions before i got them? I would appreciate any insight and please talk me out of buying from this pet store! thanks!

I would guess that they were near death when you got them. Do NOT support this store and make them think there is a demand for WC amphibians! Take a look at the For Sale animals here. Where in the US are you?

I'm very sorry for your loss - it could have been a flesh-eating bacteria with a secondary fungal infection. The spike in temps helped it all grow more rapidly. My C. Orientalis didn't eat for several weeks and they were fine as it was just stress and probably their whole journey. With yours, it was way more.

Check out the site here and someone is bound to have what you're looking for - you can even put in a "Wanted" ad.

Good luck,
Dana

thanks for your help Dana! I'm actually just outside of Orlando. I have found some newts that Jennewts was selling and they look healthy and beautiful. I only held back from buying them directly from her b/c of the shipping cost (30 bucks to overnight ship). its a shame b/c they would definitely be healthy from her, but I just don't have the almost 50 bucks right now to order them online. I will not go back to that location to get more newts. I have been asking around at pet stores and they have told me that they don't get shipments of them this time of year b/c of the heat, so I don't know how well the newts would fare in transit even though they are being overnighted and from a reliable source. thanks for your help though!

I'm in Ft. Lauderdale! I have a ton of juvenile C. Orientalis you are welcome to take if interested. I've been told they shouldn't be shipped now, but we have Sea World passes and I could bring them to you! Juveniles are difficult from what I understand. We've been lucky so far. The oldest morphed in mid-June, so unless you're willing to take on juveniles, you'd have to wait until they're more mature...but I do have about 50 of them! The experts suggest waiting til they're a year or more old, post-morphing, I assume. The heat in our lovely state has been unbearable this summer, hasn't it? I've put all of our morphs and the few larvae I still have in my middle son's room as it stays cool. It's something to consider when living in our climate - how to cool, etc.

Jen's in CA, I believe. Read up on C. O. and see if they're a species you'd enjoy and let me know. We may make it back to Orlando this year to use the passes...

yeah def let me know! i love C.O. but i have been discouraged since I never can get my hands on healthy ones. I have never had them long and I have read up on them enough to take one or 2. If you are in the area, definitely let me know please! maybe once it cools down a bit, i could get them shipped.

im very sorry to hear about your newts. If you do think of buying a new newt make sure your newt is/has...fat but not like bloated. coloful skin/eyes. and no wounds.
