I've never tried growing duckweed so i bought some from ebay to try and threw it in my tank and it smells horrible. from what i have been reading that's what it's suppose to smell like but i'm wondering if duckweed is good for my firebelly newts or should i remove it? i'm really dissapointed with it. i thought it was a clean plant.

I've never noticed any smell from duckweed. It seems very clean to me.
Any plant received by mail should be rinsed well, and perhaps even kept in quarantine for a few days, before throwing it into the tank. I'm thinking that it may have developed some bacterial growth or decay during transit.
