Newts and aquarium plants: my little gardeners

Sigh. My pleurodeles really love to uproot the plants in thier tank. They're only planted in the gravel at the bottom of the tank. Is there a way to keep them down, without using those bendable metal weights? I worry about putting bare metal in my aquarium - I'd rather not. The only thing I've found that keeps the plants down is to plant them in coarser gravel in the little plastic baskets that they come in - but those are ugly.

How about some larger rocks?

As in, sticking the bottoms of the plants under larger rocks to hold them down? I tried that - the plants keep dying when I do that. :/

Now one of them has taken to pulling one of the plastic plants up, too! (it's suction-cupped to the bottom of the tank). They're so cute. Hee!

no, place the roots of the plants in the gravel and then place the rock on top of it, works for me
