Hi all,
I think this thread will fit here. Not mentioning anywhere specific but in a abandend quarry i know there are a number of ponds filling up one of them being rather big, there are many palmate newts and i have spotted a few common newts no Triturus cristatus though but i think maybe there could be. The ponds have litter in them and are not fenced of or anything so im thinking that they are unknown does anyone know who i should contact about this, i think the area would make a nice little home for the newts if it was cleand up a bit.
anyone have any ideas.

Perhaps organizing a neighborhood cleanup type day would be beneficial.

Hi Rich,

I've been looking through the press stories to see if I can find any authority referenced in Wales that you could contact for assistance. I have found the following:

Jules Howard of Froglife, the UK wildlife charity which works for the conservation of amphibians and reptiles, and Froglife's Wildlife Information Officer, Lucy Benyon:

Julian Jones of Radnorshire Wildlife Trust:

Mr Felton, who managed lake fisheries in Merseyside, seasoned anti-roads campaigner Rebecca Lush Blum, and Species officer Matthew Ellis of the Countryside Council for Wales:

Chris Cotton in Flintshire County (neat article by the way):

Voluntary newt surveyor with the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Stephen Lowe:

Or perhaps you could just begin with the local branch of your Wildlife Trust.

Hope this helps or provides inspiration,

Awesome feedback,
I will get on the case as soon as i can thanks alot for the replies.
Rich.

Rich,

If you're thinking of a Pond Cleanup, try your local branch of Keep Wales Tidy. They have been running an Afonydd Glan (Clean Rivers) initiative for some time now, and I don't see why this shouldn't also extend to ponds.

I'd recommend contacting your local wildlife trust regarding newt surveys etc - they'll be able to advise and perhaps help. The Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is the licensing authority for newt surveys if you think there are Great Cresteds present - generally speaking this is possible if you live in eastern Wales (I won't say where) but not likely in the west.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
