I came home from a 5 days long trip to find that one of my dobrogicus is dead...:( It was highly decomposed which leads me to think that´s it´s been dead for at least 3 days or so....which means it´s not the lack of food but some condition that was already there before i left. I didn´t find him to be showing any sign of illness before leaving...except for maybe his skin being unusually smooth. I don´t know but judging from the scene i found i think it died while shedding. Anyway...this things happen....all my other newts look perfectly healthy so i´m assuming this one died for particular reasons as an exception.
Sad day....:(

Sorry to hear it, Rodrigo. Unusually shiny skin on a newt (most noticeable when on land) is an indicator of bad health, although I don't know why.

That's too bad, Rodrigo. I'm sorry to hear that.

Thanks. It´s so sad when you loose an animal you´ve raised, at least since it was a morph....

I'm always sorry to hear of an animal loss. I'm pretty good at detachment and viewing it from a removed point of view (yes, even when it's my animals) but it still affects me.

View it as an opportunity to move your aquari in a new direction. A gap in the population is a gap that could be filled with a new and different animal, I feel. I have a 55 gal. tropical fish tank and when they start to wane in years I'm planning an amphibian revolution complete with a terrestrial portion being created to house frogs. As sad as it is going to be to lose my mollies and platys it'll be an exciting new experiment in fish and amphibian keeping.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
