I had a previous thread about this issue, but it died, I guess....

....and I really need help now. I have been giving persistent salt baths, and my newt's bones grew back, but the skin kept deteriorating. Last night he lost the two lower arm bones that he had regrown....I have no idea how they came off, but they did. Now he's down to his elbow and I don't think it's going to stop any time soon. He's usually lethargic and unhappy. So, what can I do for him now? I am continuing the salt baths, but they don't seem to be working on this. I really don't want to just lose him, of course.

What temperatures are you keeping him at? try to keep him as cool as possible.

The tank is a little over 18C (65F). Should I refrigerate him? I don't have a tank cooling system or anything, the newt is just in the basement since that's all I can afford to do.

I've had a C. orientalis with the same problem, did not give him salt baths or put it in the cold. Just put in quarantine, re-creating a setup like that in everything that was in the tank mates. However with a sterile scissors amputate the leg bone that was fleshed close to the meat. Days later began to regenerate the member, not regenerated completely, but today is alive and happy and back along with tank mates and health!

Sorry my English!

Hope this helps!

Thank you! I will see what I can do about removal of the rotting limb...it seems best to remove what's left of it before the infection reaches his body. It is already quite close, I hope I can catch it in time.
