Hi all,
It has been a while. I have been reading the posts religiously but haven't been able to post sooner. Two weeks ago I went to the Old Town Aquarium in Chicago, a truly amazing place. The employees are exceptionally knowledgeable about every plant and animal species they carry. I saw a newt in one of their tanks that seemed to be a T. granulosa. Upon closer inspection I confirmed it was indeed a T.gran being very obviously bothered by a crab and a fish that seemed to harass it. I immediately made the decision to get this little guy and introduce it to Izzie. Izzie has lived alone for a minimum of 10 years and I was a little concerned to introduce a second newt into his tank. But I recently increased his tank size and thought that he could well use the companionship (yes, I did read several posts about newts social behavior but I thought it still might be nice for Izzie to have a buddy.) Here are a couple of pictures shortly after Moe's introduction to Izzie's home. The pictures are a week old and taken in Izzies last home (a 30 gallon tank). Izzie and Moe now live in the 55 gallon tank. Maybe I am imagining things, but Izzie did seem to show interest and checked out Moe. I fed them live food (black worms) for the first time and they went crazy for them. Moe seems very young. I think she is a female but I thought I ask you guys for your opinion. If she is a female, is there a chance they might mate? Izzie is about 12 years old. I hope these pictures will do but if you need better close ups to determine his/her gender please let me know.
I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone on this forum for sharing their experience and knowledge. I couldn't have done this without you guys.
