The above story is wonderfully British. We spent £50,000 building a fence to keep newts away from a breeding ground that is being developed (retirement homes) and failed to build a single pool to replace the loss of habitat. Maybe they have and forgot to mention it. The BBC has run a number of stories on "Newt Fences" recently (usually despairing at the cost). This one http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_east/3653056.stm claims that their purpose is to "stop the protected great crested newts, which are attracted by the roadworks' vibrations" - can this be true?
