Ive been keeping a couple of torrent newts for about a month now

both were doing really well and eating like pigs. last time i can confirm they ate like pigs was 4 days ago

today i noticed one isnt doing too well. has a large white patch of skin on his/her tail. spending a lot of time just above the water... climbing on a piece of wood.

ill attach a picture... to help diagnose

i think the water temp might have been higher the past couple of days.... today it definitely felt a tad higher than room temp (25C?)

the other newt is doing fine and ate his fill today. the one with the patch did not eat

please give advice

he/she is also quite sluggish today

is it a shed gone bad? is it an injury he/she is healing from? fungus?

ive had more of a look... the affected area seems to get bigger. it looks to me like there is an injury... and the mucous/slime the newt produces is congealing on the affected area

This looks like a sore, which may have started by the newts (which are highly territorial and aggressive) fighting, or simply through the stress of the terrible conditions involved in importing these animals from China.
You need to separate the animals, make sure the water quality is perfect and get the temperature down, below 20 and below 18 if possible. These animals are cold water newts and temps as high as 25C will potentially kill them, particularly if they are new imports.

There is an article on aquarium cooling on caudata culture here: Caudata Culture Articles - Cooling

If you need to, refrigerate the animal in water. Cooling can help the animal heal by slowing pathogen growth while not inhibiting the immune system.

Also, look here:

and here for a caresheet on the species

Good luck
