as many faithful members will have noticed, i have not been as active in the forum in quite a few months. after graduating college last december i have been looking into grad school and jobs related to my fields (geography and biology). one common stumbling block i have is lack of field work experience, and this is hard to obtain as i cannot leave the animals for too long as i have no one with enough time or knowledge locally to help me out. plus my cat has been ill and i dont want to leave her to just someone who will check in for just a short time each day then leave.

the grad school i applied to wanted me to either have field work experience or to have been published. neither one of these options were available to me at my college. all i had was laboratory experience, lots of it too, but at his school the undergrads actually have work study field work jobs!

my solution has come with the aid of some long time friends who live north of Denver and have a house with a full basement. one of them is a former vet tech and both are animal people. so by about October i should be fully embedded in Thornton, CO (north of you Dave but still close!). the animals will be moved up there in stages, a few racks at a time. once set up there i can take on temp field work jobs to gain the experience i need.

i still wont be too active for a while as we are in mandatory over time mode at work (50 hours minimum) and now i will be essentially moving on weekends.

Oh hey Paris, i dont know you, but you are the first person on this forum who gave me a chance at raising salamanders, so i thought i'd drop a line. My best wishes with you and your career.

Hey Paris, I don't know you that good either, but you seem really cool, and you did help me find some people that had some alpine newt's egg's, and now I have some newt's that I have raised from egg's.

Thanks, and good luck with moving all of your newts and sally, and good luck with your new career.

Hey Paris,
I've known you for years....and still think you're great! A little eccentric

...but very smart and passionate toward the hobby. Congrats on the move! I'm happy for you.

(I don't know why I used the dog icon?...man's best friend I guess, until they pee on the carpet! besides, the dog icon is not used a lot)

Good luck moving. I'll be moving at the end of the week. I'm grateful I've got someplace to leave my animals so I could do field work.

I hope things work out for you!

Paris I never had the opportunity to correspond with you in this forum. But from reading many of your post, I have found you to be very knowledgeable and passionate about Amphibians!
Best wishes to you always!
Alberto

I'm glad that you found a very accommodating in to obtain some field experience. It can often be difficult and with your collection of newts (at least from what I've gathered) this is a blessing.

I really don't know you well except as that poster with lots of useful information and animals, but I know you have a passion for amphibians! I wish you good luck in this venture.

Same here, read a lot and I believe you've helped me on Kingsnake before. Thanks and best wishes!

I'll tell you a funny story. When I first joined the forum I read, as all new members should, the caudata.org magazine (where's the 2nd issue!?). There's a photo of some members at IAD in the US and whilst reading the names underneath the photo managed to confuse Paris with a chap called Dick Bartlett (she's sitting in front of people - it was an easy mistake to make!). I then spent the next year thinking Paris was an old guy who looks like Father Christmas. Various questions posed themselves in that year... how may old people like punk? can you really go to college when you're that old? Why does he have ladies hands? etc...

I should point out that Paris is not a common name in the UK and I had no idea whether it was male or female.

Best of luck with the move and I hope the field work goes well, Paris.

If you are as good in your chosen profession as Dick is (professional photographer & author), then you will go far Paris.

All the best.

Good luck with the move, Paris.

Mark, thank you for the story. That has to be the funniest case of mistaken identity I ever heard

Paris:

Your posts were some of the first I read on this forum. Who wouldn't want to see what a gal with a blonde mohawk - apparently ready to eat a newt - had to say. Having read your posts closely, there's never been any doubt in my mind you really know your stuff.

I also like your tank designs, they are attractive and functional.

Good luck with your move.

Gord

you've given me good advice, and I thank you!!!
GOOD LUCK IN FUTURE ENDEAVOURS!!! stay in touch with the forum!!!

I just want to shout out a huge "thank you!" to Paris for spending her hard earned money to ship me my waltl on an all expenses paid permanent vacation to my house. And tonight the "easy" female is laying again

um... do you want some eggs paris?

And besides that, If anyone new gets a chance to read back through the archive you will be astounded by the volumes of knowledge Paris has bestowed on us all...

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
