Hi Everyone,
My name is Laura. I have extensive experience with all kinds of animals but new to amphibians. I have a European Fire Salamander on its way from South Fl and have been doing research to ensure he or she is happy. One question I have is how do I sex my Salamander? He /she is coming tuesday so maybe I should just wait and see if I can tell the difference.

I also have a red eft and a black salamander my daughter caught around here. I did look him up and forget what he's called but we live in CT and its the same kind of salamanders Ive found my whole life.

I also have a red eyed tree frog on the way and plan to buy some more amphibians(different kinds of salamanders) as I do research, ect... I just wanted to introduce myself and say please if anyone had any advice or helpfull tips I would appretiate it. I want to make sure I do this right. So far my newt and salamander are doing great.

Do any of these guys need UVB?

Welcome! I don't know about the RETF, but salamanders in general don't need UVB. If they are fed crickets, etc., they do need supplementation with a good calcium/vitamin powder.

One thing to be aware of as you do your research is that most commercially-available salamanders are wild-caught, probably including the fire sal. Taking a salamander from the wild locally will usually have less impact than supporting commercial trade in wild ones.

All the best with your sals. Have you found the caresheets on Caudata Culture?
