Hi. I have been fascinated by newts for a long time. Recently i tried my hand at it. After a month both of my red spotted newts died during the same 8 hours
. I'm not sure what could have killed them as the small daphnia type creatures and the tiny shrimp that live in the water are still doing fine. I would Love to get more newts but i don't want to do that until i figure out what happened and fix it.
10 gal. tank. water temp between 50 and 60. plastic plants and a pull out rock. a plastic baggie cut into strips for egg laying. air for the "green water" but very slow and non disruptive. To keep the water from getting too hot i was using water frozen in plastic bottles. All the newts ate very well. I fed them bloodworms, black trout worms and freeze dried tubifex. i fed them 3 times a week. They were alive at 6 am when i left for work and put a frozen water bottle in the tank. When i got home at 5 pm they were all dead!
i'm hoping someone can help me out because i'd love to own more newts but not if i'm going to endanger them. Thank you.
