My axies got a lovely suprise today, introduction to their new 3 foot tank! They look absolutly tiny in it lol and I have had to order a load more stuff to fill it up a bit. It's a 160 L tank but I have only filled it about half way up, sparse layer of what was their black sand in their old tank (put this in to help the cycle along with a resin bridge) is on the bottom and they have lots of tubes and hides to play in. Definitely going to trawl through the tank pics thread and get some inspiration! :D

One thing I am unsure on it whether or not to fix on the hood. It has two huge strong lights in that I would never use and the access with the hood on is absolutly rubbish (hence I have had to take it off to get in to feed/clean etc). Can I get away with leaving the tank with no lid on? I was thinking of making a mesh lid, any ideas?

Will post some pics soon when I find my camera :p

NICE! Pictures please!

Re: the hood - unless you have cats/small children/clumsy spouse, you should be ok with it off. I don't use hoods on any of my tanks.

But if you think there is the slightest chance of stuff getting spilt into it or someone getting in when they shouldn't, deal with the faff and add the hood! I wouldn't fill it right up either - axies have been known to go on unexpected adventures on the carpet.

Hi, thanks for replying  Clumsy spouse.....check.......lol the only thing I was worried about getting in was things like flies but when i think about it I used to keep the hood on my old tank propped open 24/7 so I guess it isn't much different!

Yeh I have read the horror stories on here of the flying lotls, The tank is filled about half way so hopefully nooo chance of them being able to vault out to go wanders.

I have a load more silk plants coming soon and I am off to the local charity shop to look for little cups etc to "plant" them in. I love this forum, would never ever ever have thought of teapot planting plants! :D

Your tank sounds like the sort I have my axolotls in and I know what you mean about the lid, is it the one with the light strip in the middle and two door flaps that lift up on either side? I find myself having to take it off to feed and clean, very annoying! But while we also have a cat (whos not interested at all luckly :p) Next doors cat sometimes finds his way into the house and he really is interested, dont want him falling in lol, so i keep the lid on for now, someday get the D.I.Y out and make a mesh lid!

Yes that is exactly what the lid is like! It is now sitting in bubble wrap in the loft lol. No idea how the person who designed the lid thought it was a good idea, my arm barely fit through the flap to reach the bottom of the tank.
